Mary Walsh Institute

MWI was created at SACCS some four years ago, with the express purpose of promoting and influencing best practice in therapeutic work with traumatised children.

Named after Mary Walsh who founded SACCS in 1987, the Institute was initially tasked with externalising the organisation's model of integrated therapeutic care through a programme of academic work, publication, continuing professional development, independent research and consultancy services. MWI is also committed to working alongside government agencies wherever possible to establish new standards of excellence in the field.

SACCS, working through MWI, was the first UK provider of a Foundation Degree in Therapeutic Child Care delivered in partnership with the University of Wales at Glyndŵr (www.glyndwr.ac.uk). This qualification which is available to the entire SACCS childcare workforce, was designed to ensure that practitioners are equipped both academically and professionally to support recovery, specifically for children who have experienced severe trauma as a result of abuse and neglect.

MWI continues to be instrumental in developing a range of higher education qualifications in therapeutic child care at BA and MA level, in collaboration with its academic partners. Further areas of growth include clinical supervision, expert witness assessments for the courts, national and international conference work, online learning, and practice consultancy in support of local authorities and independent providers throughout the UK. The organisation promotes practice for all professionals working with vulnerable children.
