Training and Development

All Therapeutic parenting teams are provided with an intensive programme of SACCS unique training and development which ensures they have the self-awareness skills and theoretical knowledge required to deliver individualised SACCS recovery programme for children with severe complex needs.

The level of training offered by SACCS is intensive as it requires each staff member to be able to understand internal trauma and its manifest behaviour in order to practically apply the working methodology as outlined in the child’s Individual Recovery Plan (IRP).

Understanding the context and real nature of a SACCS child’s distress is the first step to being able to deliver recovery.
Each student is provided with three levels of training over a two year period which supports the three levels of recovery. The first level (Staff Induction) requires achievement to statutory compliance and is expected to be completed within the first 12 weeks.

The second level of training culminates in staff achieving a Diploma in Children and Young Peoples Workforce. Acquiring the Diploma will enable the student to understand aspects of behaviour; to work with the IRP and monitor, observe and report on a child’s behavioural change. Finally the third level is the achievement of a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Therapeutic Child Care.

From this point, graduates are equipped to understand, practically apply and articulate the intricacies of trauma as the child recovers from a poor internalised model to one that is positive and healthy.

Fully qualified SACCS Recovery practitioners in Therapeutic Parenting become the next generation of Demonstrators, Coaches and Mentors to new students. They work at the highest levels of practice and contribute to the team’s understanding of the child’s internalised state. Together with other professional colleagues they manage the transition of children as they move on and the arrival of new children as they enter residential care at SACCS.

The following diagram shows the SACCS Development Programme highlighting not only the standard training opportunities but also those that are open to staff dependent on their future career path.
